When you have been with your partner long term, it is normal for your relationship to plateau and feel that spark has disappeared. This could be due to your busy lifestyle which can be consumed by work and children. This can lead to many ramifications including unhappiness or even separation if steps are not taken to make things as they used to be.

Even in our busy schedules, below are some very simple steps to making your relationship last, and to bring back the spark you have been missing.

Date Night

It is always important to take time for romance. Aim to do this at least once a week, whether it is a quiet dinner or a drink at a bar. This will allow you to talk and give each other more attention than what you usually would in your busy lives.

Honesty Is the Best Policy

Be honest. Don’t lie, and definitely do not cheat. These issues can lead to distrust which will be very difficult to fix in the long term. If you are unhappy with something, communicate with your partner to try and reach a resolution. Remember, the truth will always come out in the end, so it is best to be honest from the start.

Do Something Your Partner Likes (Even If You Don't)

Whether it's watching that action packed movie or going fishing, it's important to acknowledge your partner’s interests and hobbies. Your partner will feel special that you have taken the time to appreciate what they enjoy. This will show that you love them for who they are. Who knows you may even have fun.

Expect Ups & Downs

Every relationship has their ups and downs, and it is normal for couples to fight. It is important to understand that it is not the end of the world if you have a disagreement; instead you should both work through your problems. This shows that you are a strong unit, and together you can overcome anything.

Say ‘I Love You’ Frequently

These three words can make a big difference in your relationship. Showing that you love and care for your partner is a true testament of how you feel about them. Saying I Love You when they least expect it will be appreciated by your partner. Whether it is in a text while they are at work or said face to face, it is a nice feeling to be reminded of the love your partner has for you.

Find an Interest & Pursue It Together

Do something that you both enjoy such as going for bike rides, doing a cooking class or enrolling in a massage course - the list is endless. This will help you reconnect and accomplish something you both enjoy.

Keep Outside Relationships & Interests Alive

It is important to have friends outside of your relationship. Catching up with them will give you a healthy break from your partner. This is the time where you can talk about things you and your partner wouldn't normally talk about, such as discussing the latest celebrity gossip or your favourite romantic comedy.

Always work hard to make your relationship last. Being in a relationship should be uplifting and a positive experience. It takes two to tango - therefore if you both make the effort, your relationship will last a life time.
