Quotes About Marriage

Many comments about marriage can be found on the internet. The quotes which are positive are the ones I'd like to believe. There are quotes which give advice about making a marriage last. Some quotes could be seen as humorous by some, or perhaps just negative to others.
Positive
American politician, Todd Tiahrt speaks about marriage in a positive way, saying, 'Next month, I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of marriage with my beautiful bride, Vicki. Our marriage has been a blessing. I have gained even more respect for the institution over the past 3 decades and will defend it against attack.'

'When a marriage works, nothing on earth can take its place,' according to Helen Gahagan (American actress and politician).
The American chef, Julia Child said, 'The secret of a happy marriage is finding the right person. You know they're right if you love to be with them all the time.' This sounds simple in theory but in reality it may be difficult to find the right person.
I think it also depends on how much time you like to spend in the company of others. Some people
need more alone time than others and even if they really love their spouse may crave time alone on a regular basis.
The importance of being friends
Friedrich Nietzsche (German philosopher) said, 'It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.'
Johnny Vegas agrees that friendship is an important component of a happy marriage. He said, 'It's lovely being a parent and being in a strong marriage with somebody who is your best friend.'
Advice
Well known TV personality, newspaper advice columnist and psychologist, Joyce Brothers, said, 'Marriage is not just spiritual communion, it is also remembering to take out the trash.' Yes, it is all very well to talk about being in love and being able to talk for hours but it is so important to share the daily chores, remembering the boring things each party is responsible for.

Humorous or perhaps just negative
Some quotes about marriage are intended to be funny, but depending on your sense of humour and your experiences with marriage, you may feel some are negative rather than amusing.
The ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates said, 'By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher'. He may have meant this to be a serious comment rather than a joke, I don't know.
Groucho Marx, American comedian and stage, film and television star, quipped, 'Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?'
'Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds outside desperate to get in, and those inside equally desperate to get out,' claimed Michel de Montaigne (French Renaissance philosopher). I am not sure if this is humorous or simply a comment that humans are rarely content with what they've got, that there is a tendency to want something else.
'When a man steals your wife, there is no better revenge than to let him keep her,' said French actor, director, and writer, Sacha Guitry. He was married five times but I don't know the details of why each marriage ended. Was his comment a joke or is there bitterness there?
Whether you want to find quotes about the joy of marriage, how to keep it strong or want to poke fun at 'the institution,' there are plenty to be found on the internet.
