How to Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve
“Let your heart be your compass, your mind your map, your soul your guide – and you will never get lost.” - Ritu Ghatourey
The expression “To wear your heart on your sleeve” was in fact an idiom first used by William Shakespeare in the play Othello. However, the meaning can be traced back to the Middle Ages when knights chose to wear their ladies’ colours tied around their arms, to show they were representing them, when going into combat (how romantic).
How times have changed, and in these days of equality of the sexes I think it is worth noting that in some cases the roles have become reversed. This has led to many women wearing their hearts on their sleeve for all the wrong reasons, and as a result, having those fragile hearts broken.
The fact that women are more emotional than men means that they find it easier to talk about how they feel and so initially rush into revealing these feelings too early. Too much disclosure in the early stages may make you vulnerable and needy. Men often hold their emotions in check, as they feel it is not always manly to discuss them; as a result, some men use this to their advantage. The following points are worth noting:
• Not every man is worthy of your heart, so take the time to really get to know the person. Set some ground rules and put limits on texting and phoning. This will ensure that each person is putting equal effort into the relationship.
• Build the relationship slowly and the foundations will only be stronger. By doing this you will find out early on if you really want to invest time and commitment to this relationship, or if it was in fact just infatuation. We are all guilty of not seeing people the way they are, but rather as we want them to be. Sometimes we need to take off the rose-tinted spectacles and not be swayed by the laws of attraction.
• As the relationship progresses, trust and respect become an integral part of it. It is within this safe haven that true feelings are revealed. At this point it should feel like the most natural thing in the world – a balance of hearts. The relationship has now become emotionally balanced, with each person complimenting the other.
Relationships are never predictable, but in the beginning stages a few thoughts on how to proceed will go a long way to finding your knight in shining armour, whose sole purpose will be to protect your heart, and in return you will win his.
